The Maui Ocean Center is both an aquarium and marine science center centrally located on Maui in Ma’alaea (Ma-uh-lay-ah) Harbor. With over 60 different species of fish, sharks, eels, Invertebrates and reptiles there are literally hundreds of aquatic creatures to enjoy. You can scuba dive in the shark tank (check directly for days & times), walk through the 54’ foot acrylic tunnel which is part of a 750,000 gallon aquarium filled with nearly 2,000 fish. View the spectacular corals hundreds of underwater creatures call home. Take a self-guided tour with a Marine Naturalist on site and available to answer questions. Learn what you can do to preserve not only Hawaii’s oceans, but oceans around the world. Light snacks or fine dining is available at the Ocean Center.
The Boo Boo Zoo
In the upcountry of Haiku off the Hana Highway is the East Maui Animal Refuge, also known as the Boo Boo Zoo. This great non-profit organization relies on donations to help injured and rescued animals. Their petting zoo is available for the little ones. Bring your GPS as it is located in a remote area and off the beaten path. Make sure you tell them you saw them in Handi Guides!
